The major in Latin American Studies requires 10 courses,
plus a senior exercise, which may be a senior thesis. Two
years of college-level Spanish or its equivalent are also
required. Students are expected to spend a semester abroad
in one of the Pomona Study Abroad programs in Latin America
during their junior year. This usually follows the fourth
semester of language instruction. Appropriate courses taken
on one of the Pomona programs in Latin America may be
counted toward the major with the permission of the Latin
American Studies Committee.
Required courses are as follows:
- three core introductory classes
- four discipline classes
- two years of college-level Spanish
- two electives
- one-semester senior tutorial or a two-semester thesis
course
The three introductory classes must be taken in
distinct areas, classified in this program as literature,
history and social sciences. For the four discipline
courses, students may choose one of the following options:
(1) two classes in two different areas
(2) two classes in one area, plus one each in the other
two distinct areas
Majors must also take the Latin American Studies senior
tutorial. All courses for the major must be taken for a
letter grade.
